The Seed-to-Sky Garden Club meets in our building and expertly maintains the community garden in our parking lot.
The Garden Club welcomes Cityview’s plant enthusiasts to join them in their program of ongoing learning. The November meeting will feature a presentation by Alex Downie.
When Alex recently retired after a 37 year career, he was Operations Manager for City-wide Parks, VanDusen Garden, Urban Forestry, and related departments. He holds a National Diploma in Horticulture and is a certified arborist. He began working at the UBC Botanical Garden, and then was hired in 1985 by Van Dusen Botanical Garden to computerize their plant accession system.
Alex has a passion for trees and shrubs. The author with Roy Forster of The Woodland Garden (2004), he is currently working with Douglas Justice of the UBC Botanical Botanical Garden on a new book, The Woody Garden Flora of Vancouver.

How do we go about selecting appropriate shrubs for our small gardens? Alex will cover factors such as site, types of shrubs, planting timeline and technique, and best practices for aftercare. He will present us with a selection of the best shrubs for sun and shade, focussing on sustainable planting in our warming climate.
